EarthView at the Y!

The Old Colony Y Girls Secure Detention Unit was pleased to welcome Dr. Hayes, a geography professor from Bridgewater State University, who presented a demonstration to youth and staff about EarthView.

EarthView is a portable globe classroom that is 20 feet tall but fits in the back of a car. Since 2008, a team of geography educators has brought the EarthView experience to 50,000 students throughout Massachusetts.

“The outside of the globe is a hand-painted, large–scale map of the Earth’s surface, showing biological communities, rivers, seas, landforms, continents, islands, oceans, and major cities.  The inside of the globe reveals the positions of tectonic plate boundaries and ocean spreading centers, along with all of the detail visible from the outside.”

The residents and staff enjoyed the presentation and further discussion was held on college courses and programs offered at Bridgewater.  The residents were motivated about the availability of a variety of educational options at the college level and it was exciting to have them experience what a college lecture may entail.

We are thankful for the teachers (Mrs. Burns and Ms. Chilson) and the first shift staff for all of the help in facilitating this lecture along with the use of the gymnasium through the OCY.  For more information on EarthView contact earthview@bridgew.edu
