Healthy Aging at the YMCA

At the Old Colony YMCA, older adults are one of our greatest resources!  We offer a comfortable place to stay active, take part in customized exercise programs to maintain their health, enjoy a sense of community, and strengthen social ties.

Our programs are designed to help adults strengthen their spirit, mind and body.   There are a variety of classes, trips, social activities, and special events available through our branches.

 

YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program

This is a yearlong lifestyle change program in a classroom setting for adults 18+ with a BMI of 25 or above who are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.  The program runs once per week for 16 weeks followed by monthly maintenance sessions for the remainder of the year.  The two goals for participants are to reduce body weight by 5-7% and increase physical activity to 150 minutes per week within the first 16 weeks.

Keep the Beat

This is a program design for individuals who display one or more risk factors for coronary artery disease or those who have graduated cardiac rehabilitation with a referral and clearance from a physician.   Keep the Beat is a 12 week  small group exercise program to help participants transition from a medically supervised program to a supportive environment to maintain ling-term healthy lifestyle habits.

Stanford Healthy Living Programs Diabetes Self-Management

This is an evidence based program to for adults living with diabetes to learn several techniques for monitoring their condition. Topics covered include: avoiding disease complications, healthy eating, exercise, medication and dealing with stress. A manual and relaxation CD is available for each participant. There are 6 weekly 2.5 hour sessions.  Caregivers are welcome to attend.

Enhance Fitness

FUN NEVER RETIRES! Treating arthritis through fun, laughter and friends! 

A proven senior fitness and arthritis management program that improves your endurance, strength, balance and flexibility. It reduces your arthritis symptoms with safe, low impact exercises led by certified instructors in a relaxed atmosphere that promotes fun, laughter, friendship and smiles.

Stretch Class

This class focuses on improving flexibility through proper stretching techniques. Benefits include low risk of injury, improved range of motion and reduced lower back discomfort

Aqua Arthritis

Sanctioned by the Arthritis Foundation, the goal of this class is to increase range of motion, strengthen, and increase endurance/ conditioning in participants through exercise.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi is an ancient and traditional form of Chinese martial art. It helps to improve coordination and balance, it increases flexibility, and it contributes to muscle relaxation and cardiovascular fitness.

Moving for Better Balance

This program includes 8 Tai Chi forms that emphasize weight shifting, postural alignment and coordinated movements.  Synchronized breathing is integrated into the movement routine.  Each session includes instructions in new movements as well as a review of previous movements.

Dynamic Yoga

A flowing sequence of postures that focuses on core stability, strength, and balance.  Recommended for participants with some yoga experience.

Gentle Yoga

A relaxing class that incorporates the principals of Hatha Yoga with the addition of restorative poses.

This class is appropriate for all fitness levels.

Hatha Yoga

Balances mind, body and spirit.  Each class consists of postures (asanas), breathing (pranayama) and relaxation techniques.  Hatha Yoga is appropriate for all fitness levels.

*Yoqua

The pool is an amazing place to experience the many benefits of yoga. It allows access to individuals that find yoga on a mat challenging. The feeling of weightlessness in the water takes the stress out of challenged joints.

Forever Fit

An overall Total body workout. Move to the music with a low impact routine that incorporates cardiovascular training, strength training and balance exercises. No one is too old to benefit from regular physical activity. Reduce the risk of osteoporosis, heart disease, diabetes, etc.

Livestrong® at the YMCA

A physical activity program designed for adult cancer survivors who have become de-conditioned or chronically fatigued from their treatment and/or disease. Our goal is to help participants build muscle mass and muscle strength, increase flexibility and endurance, and improve functional ability. This 12 week program meets twice weekly for 1.25 hours.

Pilates

This class consists of matwork that focuses on strengthening and lengthening your muscles. Learn proper breathing, concentrate on core muscles (abdominal and lower back), tone all muscle groups and improve flexibility.

ZUMBA GOLD

The perfect class for those who wish to modify the moves and pace of Zumba.  Great for seniors or those just starting on their journey to a healthier life style!

AQUA ZUMBA

A GREAT combination – Zumba and Aqua Fitness!  The same great Latin music with the benefits of a water workout!

AQUA FITNESS

Water workouts are easy on the joints and can improve your cardiovascular fitness, strength, flexibility and balance.
